structural spray-applied fireproofing inspection

Whenever fireproofing is required on your industrial or commercial project, special inspection is mandatory — WH Engineering provides the ICC-certified inspection services you need.

why is it required?

Spray-applied fireproofing (SFRM) protects your structural steel's fire-resistance rating — but only if it's installed correctly. Per IBC Chapter 17, special inspection is mandatory whenever a fire-resistance rating depends on SFRM thickness, density, or adhesion. Once fireproofing is concealed behind ceilings, ductwork, or finishes, deficiencies become costly — or impossible — to correct. Independent verification protects your project, your building official approval, and your bottom line.

Inspection scope:

  • Sprayed Fire-Resistive Materials

  • Thin-Film Intumescent Fire-Resistive Materials

  • Substrate condition and surface preparation

  • Dry film thickness (DFT) verification

  • Density testing per ASTM E605

  • Bond and cohesive/adhesive strength per ASTM E736 / E760 / E761

  • Application uniformity and coverage

  • Code compliance documentation and reporting

WHY CHOOSE WH ENGINEERING FOR SPECIAL INSPECTION?

WH Engineering is uniquely qualified as both a PE-licensed structural engineering firm and an ICC-certified special inspection provider. Under IBC Section 1704.2.1, the registered design professional in responsible charge is expressly permitted to act as the approved agency — and that is exactly what WH Engineering offers. When our inspector identifies a field condition that doesn't match the approved plans, we have the structural engineering authority to evaluate it, communicate with the design team, and provide immediate, technically sound guidance. You don't just get an inspector — you get a licensed structural engineer on your side, from approved plans to final inspection report.
